Ventura Harbor

Thanks to a facelift courtesy of the Army Corps of Engineers, the infamous South Jetty peak is primarily a distant memory with the occasional wedging right still showing its face on solid southerly lines. It's still there, but it's not near as good or even close to being as consistent. Just one of those tradgedies. The wave was drowned out by a new groin structure about a football fields' length away. This "New Jetty", is just down the beach from the South Jetty and thus absorbs much of the necessary swell energy required to reflect the once hunchbacked peak.

New Jetty does have a decent sandbar that forms around its tip and occasional will spin off a fun left. Southerly swell energy is your best bet for good shape, as the northwest winter swells generally seem to overpower the meager jetty. The water here gets deep pretty fast thanks to the harbor entrance, which means that higher tides can easily flood the sandbars. Plan your session for larger swells or manageable tides to avoid the dreaded mush and roll effect.

Crowd Factor: The harbor area still gets checked when the surf's pumping. And because it breaks so rarely now in comparison to a decade earlier... when it's on, there'll be quite a few heads in the line up.

Location: Directly south of the Ventura Harbor. Turn off Harbor Blvd. and head down Spinnaker Drive. Before you hit the end of the road, turn left into the free parking lot (which opens after dawn).

Access: As mentioned above, this is just a short hop off of Harbor Blvd. Once you're in the parking lot, it's a quick walk over to the sand which provides a great view of both South Jetty and New Jetty. On a clear day, you can see all the way down to the Santa Clara Rivermouth.

Amenities: The beach here is a popular destination and the city has done a fine job developing it. There are showers, restrooms, a couple beverage machines, and free parking available.
