California Street

The local municipality calls it Surfer's Point. But to the Ventura wave riding community, the name C Street will do just fine. Formed many moons ago from sediment deposits via the Ventura River, the right pointbreak consistenly offers rideable waves year round. Boasting a massive swell window, C Street pulls in long period surf out of the northwest, west, south, or southwest.

The cobblestone bottom prefers a low to medium tide and a wind pushing from the north to northeast. Too much east in the wind, and there'll be a frustrating cross chop. The point refracts groundswells all the way from a due west direction near the top of the point, to wrapping in at almost true north once it hits the inside sections.

The most popular spot here is Pipe, located at the top of the point. The long walls here break fast, and are often hollow as determined by the sand flow from the Ventura rivermouth. On a low tide, the lines may break a little too quickly, leaving you behind a never ending section. Again, this is a function of the sand flow and bottom conditions. Cruising down the point, the next take off spot is Stables, characterized by the quadruped hangout at the county fairgrounds behind the C Street parking lot. The continuing right lines begin to refract here toward the point and make for a zippy, yet predictable shoulder. Last up is California Street. The peak here fronts the main parking area and serves up a more subdued right coupled with a steeper and faster left depending on the swell size and direction. In summary, you've got three distinct take off zones distributed along a mile long point of land fed by a rivermouth. Not a bad setup by anyone's standards.

Crowd Factor: Oh yeah, it's crowded. Tanker city. Consistent waves, predictable shoulders, easy access, toss in a couple surf cameras... and you've got the perfect recipe for a popular break. C-street does pack a crowd, but with such an elongated shoreline, there's usually a bit of elbow room. If it gets too frustrating, just head up the point a bit more toward the rivermouth.

Location: Duh... California Street. Directly in front of the towering Crowne Plaza hotel next to the Ventura Pier. This is just north of the San Buenaventura State Beach Park. If you're taking the 101 freeway, exit California Street if your coming from the south, or Ventura Avenue if you're coming from the north. From there, take Thompson Blvd. to Figueroa Street and head to the beach.

Access: Step one: claim parking space. Step two: enter water. It's that easy. The parking lot follows the curve of the point as it heads along Perimeter Road which means every spot is within a short walk of the water's edge. However, the public showers and restrooms are down toward the free parking area and entrance to the pay lot. Just something to keep in mind when you're grabbing your parking space.

Amenities: Parking (free and pay), showers, grass, picnic benches, restrooms... the whole enchilada. Ventura has done an exceptional job developing the waterfront here while keeping it ecologically sound. The pier (just to the south), offers good restuarant style dining with a nice view of the surf. There's also a cemented walkway between the beach and parking lot that's perfect for a morning jog or taking your canine companion for a walk. It's honestly a pretty cool place to hang out.
