Emma Wood

A wedging beachbreak dumping over sand and cobblestone. The outer reef, Ventura Overhead, is a powerful deep water peak breaking almost a quarter mile from shore. When it’s pumping you’ll see it from the highway. The rights funnel down the line like a massive bowling point break, while the lefts pitch into a shorter but similarly intense ride over the mysterious deep water shelf. The outside reef configurations also break up the incoming swells and transform the lines into manageable peaks for the inside sandbars. Low tide activates the outside reefs. Mid to high tides cause the swell energy to pass up the reef and focus on the beachbreak. Northeasterly canyon winds are offshore here.

Crossed up swells interact favorably with the rock/cobblestone outcrops dotting the surf zone along the south end of the main beach. The incoming surf overlapps itself in several locations here, spawning a handful of wedging sandbar bowls perfect for cover up barrels and mini-ramps. On low tides, be on the lookout for exposed cobblestones and the occasional lobster trap.

Crowd Factor: There's a relatively consistent and predictable crew of shortboarders and bodyboarders. Summer crowds can get a bit hectic as the beach is inundated with inland visitors and kids on summer vacation.

Location: Emma Wood State Beach. One mile south of Solimar and just off the 101 Hwy.

Access: Free parking is available along Pacific Coast Highway and in a dirt lot overlooking the break. There’s an easily navigatable trail down to the shoreline across the train tracks (use caution).

Amenities: Free parking and a campground. On occasion, the state officials will have portable restrooms dropped off during the peak season. Food, lodging, gas stations, and ATMs are a couple miles south in Ventura.
