Solimar

Dumping over 300 yards from the safety of dry land, Solimar Reef ledges big winter swells into a magnificent peak that packs quite a punch. The reef does prefer a low tide and is often wrapped in a kelp bed until a macking swell steams in and wipes it clean. Closer to shore, the reforming waves interact with the cobblestone bottom and morph into a mushy right. On summer souths there's often a much faster left that breaks off the same line. Finally, the swell energy transitions from the uneven cobblestone bottom to the dumpy sandbars on the inside. Depending on the sand formation and the swell direction, the beachbreak can range from a brutal closeout to playful and forgiving.

During the winter months, Solimar Beach often becomes Ventura County's greatest collection of driftwood. Everything from tiny twigs to full on tree trunks somehow manage to wash ashore here. So if you're ever bored and looking for a hobby...

Crowd Factor: The crowds here can be sporadic. It gets predictably crowded during the summer months with beachgoers, inland visitors, and beginners clogging the line up. When the outer reef is the call, expect the crowd to become a factor. The take off zone is frustratingly compressed and should be accompanied by a maximum occupancy regulation. The inside point and sandbars spread the pack out a bit, and can honestly handle a pretty decent sized crowd during a combo swell when both the point and beachbreak are working.

Location: Solimar Beach is a small gated community that's identified on most maps. It's nestled between Pitas Point and Emma Wood State Beach. About a mile up the road from each.

Access: Free parking is available along Pacific Coast Highway. Be sure to lock your car, as there have been issues with break-ins in the past. Also, be careful when you're making a U-turn along this stretch of the highway. In front of the main dirt lot, it's a solid double yellow line and the local authorities are quick to hand out moving violations.

Amenities: There's a portable restroom available, along with the obvious benefit of free parking. But nothing really in the way of food, gas, or showers.
