Also known as Tropics due to the palm trees lining the campground, Hobson’s is a cobblestone peak that can offer up a decent right wall on a solid westerly swell. The uneven bottom occasionally spins off an equally fun, but shorter left for the patient wave rider. Wind swells and small conditions usually translate to filtered reforms that can dissuade even the most desperate surfers. Hobson’s demands Aleutian juice and a medium tide. It’s not one of those super-exposed, consistent guarantee type of spots. Nevertheless, if an overhead swell with a westerly origin is running and you happen to be searching for a campsite between Ventura and Santa Barbara… it’s not a bad choice.
Out the back, there’s a deep water shelf called Seacliff Reef. As the surf pushes toward the double overhead mark, an intensely concentrated peak starts dumping about half a mile from shore. Expect steep elevator drops on the takeoff, although the waves quickly flatten out and dissipate.

Crowd Factor: Although the primary take off zone is pretty tight, unless the place is absolutely firing the crowd is never really a major issue. Outlet lefts offer the pack some diversity and ensures that everyone gets a set wave or two. The nature of the break itself attracts more longboarders than anything. The rock outcrops and uneven cobblestone bottom usually make for several separate peaks that spread the crowd out a bit.
Location: Between Mussel Shoals and Faria Beach. The break fronts Hobson County Park. Look for the cluster of palm trees right after the homes at Seacliff.
Access: Parking is available along Pacific Coast Highway or in the campground directly in front of the take off zone. Getting to the shoreline involves a quick hop over the rock barrier and a delicate dance across the cobblestone beach until you reach the water’s edge. Nothing too tricky.
Amenities: Restrooms, showers, and even a snack stand that's open during the peak season. Not a bad hangout even if the surf’s not cooperating.
