Mussel Shoals

The break known as Little Rincon has seen a major resurgence in popularity over the last few years. You can probably blame the easy access and zippy right lines. Just south of its big sister down the beach, Mussel Shoals is usually a bit smaller and a step down on the performance scale when compared to Rincon Point. The waves here approach the break at a pretty extreme angle, which can make for a mean current during periods of high surf. A direct west swell coupled with a low tide accelerates the waves into fast lines that’ll keep you racing the sections and kicking on the afterburners. The bottom here is primarily cobblestone, with a few pointy boulders mixed in for thrills.

Crowd Factor: The primary take off zone near the point can get pretty congested. The pack thins out as you head south toward Ventura. The wave does have a tendency to outrace surfers and section rather predictably. This helps to ensure that everyone gets their fair share.

Location: Directly off Hwy 101 exit Mussel Shoals. Look for the long structure leading out to the oil island.

Access: There’s limited free parking in the neighboring community along Breakers Way or Ocean Avenue. From there, navigate your way down to the water’s edge either from south of the hotel, or just below the road leading out to the island.

Amenities: Not much. The hotel and tiny community fronting the beach were never designed with surfers in mind. Expect free parking and the occasional nice neighbor that’ll let you use their garden hose to rinse off.
