Less than a mile south of County Line is a relatively mellow cobblestone/reef/sandbar setup known as Staircase. It's considered by many to be a longboard spot; a typical wave here burps on the outside, rolls a little ways, backs off, and then dumps again on the inside sandbars (honestly, not as bad as it sounds). Winds of a northerly origin are offshore here, and the kelp beds clinging to the offshore reefs help to minimize the surface chop during malevolent breezes. Depending on the sand placement, periods of small surf coupled with higher tides can activate a punchy shorebreak on the inside during crossed up swells. Lower tides cause the surf to break further out and expose the rocky shoreline. Both rights and lefts are common here, but are best determined by the dominant swell that happens to be pushing through. About a quarter mile from shore, there's a system of reef patches that break on massive swells or low tides. Rarely worth the paddle, these rock outcrops offer an intense vertical drop and then die out as the waves rapidly dissipate over deeper water. Fickle, but quite a spectacle on immense swells. Generally speaking, expect a mellow ride with some zippy lines when the tide drops and the conditions start pushing overhead.

Crowd Factor: While not as packed as the neighboring breaks of Leo Carillo and County Line, Staircase does draw a dedicated crowd of locals that have been surfing here for years. However, there are still vacant shoulders that push through, and the mellow vibe in the water usually ensures everyone gets their fair share. Party wave anyone?
Location: Halfway between the actual LA/Ventura county line, and the surf spot County Line. Also about a mile north of Leo Carillo. Staircase is just south of the condominium complex that extends up to the surf spot County Line. While driving along Pacific Coast Highway, look for the dirt parking lot with the gate.
Access: Parking is available along Pacific Coast Highway or in the dirt lot for a small fee (rarely enforced, but it's still expected). From there, take the dirt trail down the cliff to the water's edge.
Amenities: In the dirt parking lot overlooking the break, there's a couple of unsanitary portable restrooms. Remember to bring your own food and water.
