Tossed into the rugged north LA county/south Ventura county coastline is the playful wave known as County Line. Regarded by many as a performance, hot-dog wave due to its forgiving nature, County Line offers up many faces depending on the swell direction and tide. While generally perceived as a summer break, westerly winter swells make their way into the meandering coast, and bowl around the rocky headland at the north end of the beach. The kelpy cobblestone bottom along the point, consistently serves up the best waves here. The rights aren't world class, but are highly rippable. On southerly swells, outlet lefts will spring up and wrap wide around the point giving the versatile wave riders a chance to unleash their full bag of tricks. As you head south, the rocky bottom rapidly transitions to sand. The rest of the break is primarily broken up sandbars with reef patches on the outside and the occasional rock tossed in to keep everyone on their toes. Medium tides are ideal as the swells have a tendency to "feel" the outer reef configurations enough to shift around into peaks, while still conserving their energy for the interior sandbars. Highers tides produce a dumpy shorepound along the beachbreak, but often leave the point flooded and unrideable. Northerly canyon winds are often a gusty offshore here, and can drop the temperature quite a few degrees below the norm. So it's not a bad idea to toss an extra jacket and beanie in the backseat before heading out on your dawn patrol.

Crowd Factor: This is a pretty popular destination for both beginners and skilled wave riders. The sandy beach, volleyball net, fire pits, and easy access draws a diverse crew from inland communities, Ventura County, Malibu, and the South Bay. There's usually a mix of longboarders, bodyboarders, and shortboarders in the line up. The majority of the pack fills in around the point and then filters down along the rest of the beachbreak as it heads south.
Location: About one mile north of the official Ventura/Los Angeles county line and just passed the oceanfront condominiums. It also happens to be directly below Neptune's Net restaurant, one of the most popular biker hangouts in the entire state.
Access: About as easy as it gets. The entire parking area along Pacific Coast Highway is elevated above the break. This means you can sit in your car with the heater blasting while you check the surf on a brisk winter morning. Once you're done suiting up, just lock you car and make your way down the dirt incline to the water's edge.
Amenities: Free parking along Pacific Coast Highway, and a couple portable restrooms. Other than that, stock up back in Malibu.
