Okay, I admit that it's not the premium spot in the eight-oh-fizzy. But if you've every charged this shorebreak on a solid south pulse backed by a medium time, you know that it's worth mentioning. The wave here benefits from a few unique factors. First and foremost, it's location at the base of Sycamore Canyon. This almost ensures cooperative morning wind conditions for anything other than a lacerating southerly breeze. The topograhy of the coastal canyons in this area often accelerate the ocean-bound breezes into tumbling streams of cool air (often pretty nippy) that run smack into the incoming swell acticity. Secondly, there's a functioning creek mouth at the west end of the tiny cove. And we all know the impact that creek and rivermouths can have on sand movement. Lastly, there's also a rock formation on the west end of the cove that makes a quasi-seawall capable of bouncing a side wave when the conditions are right. Hence the need for a mid to high tide. On a low tide, the shorebreak is still there, but it's pretty much a brutal closeout. The ocean floor here and general beach condition are continually changing as a result of the pounding surf. Seasonal storms can either bury many of the rocks and outcroppings completely along the shoreline, or wash sand from this protected area, revealing a boulder-strewn floor. Truly, a dynamic surf spot. And keep your eyes open for traveling gray whales during their migration season.

Crowd Factor: While you'll get the occasional rogue shortboarder or bodyboarder, this spot is rarely crowded. The biggest pack is usually on the beach enjoying a nice day of sun and frolic with the family. Bikini clad inlanders and the elderly usually outnumber surfers ten to one.
Location: Sycamore Cove State Park in the Point Mugu State Park system. Located north of the countly line, and just south of Thornhill Broome State Beach. This area of the coast is a bit isloated, so here are the coordinates if it helps: Lat 34.04.2, Long 119.00.7
Access: Pretty simple. While the state park system restricts free parking along Pacific Coast Highway directly in front of the cove to encourage beach users to pay the lot parking fee, there is abundant free parking along Pacific Coast Highway, east and west of the cove. From there, it's just a short walk to the shoreline.
Amenities: Showers, restrooms, picnic tables, and even lifeguards during the summer months. Great campgrounds and hiking trails in the area.
