Port Hueneme

A classic beachbreak setup complete with a harbor jetty, a fishing pier, and million dollar condos overlooking the sand. The jetty to the north is the entrance to the Port Hueneme Harbor. It does a great job of holding the sand in place and consistenly offers a fun shoulder or two. The jetty lines are predictable and can get bowly on a solid summer pulse. South of here is the fishing pier. This is a pretty typical pier setup with broken up sandbars and fast lines peeling in both directions, depending on the dominant swell angle. As long as the winds are cooperative, Port Hueneme's surf is generally hollow and heavy. The shoreline here sees quite a bit of sand movement, but usually can hold its own on both high and low tides. However, extreme negative tides can seriously drain the beachbreak leaving behind a shapeless closeout. Crossed up swells make for a panoramic view of stellar peaks dumping up and down the beach.

Be aware that south of the pier is usually bigger and more consistent during hefty swells due to the harbor jetty shadow. There's also another key point to remember: Due to the curvature of the shoreline here, the north end of the beach is partially sheltered from the afternoon winds. Northwest breezes are actually side-offshore here. Just something to keep in mind when the winds are howling and everywhere else is choppy and lumpy.

Crowd Factor: Light to moderate. There are two primary areas where you can consistently expect to find other wave riders... the pier and the jetty. But before you get frustrated, recognize that there's a lot of open room to move around at this beach. The sand here stretches south passed the pier, all the way down to Point Mugu. And with miles of open sand, there's ususally a vacant shoulder with your name on it.

Location: Immediately south of the Port Hueneme Harbor. Take Ventura Road south until you hit the ocean. Once you're at the beach, there's a T-intersection. Turning right will take you towards the jetty at the north end of the beach, while turning left will take you over to the pier.

Access: The only trick to access here is the pay/free parking dilemma. Anywhere in the beachfront lots or along Surfside Drive is pay parking. However, along Ventura Road... and the north end of Surfside Drive as it curves inland, there's one and two hour free parking available. If you think your session will take longer, your best bet is to park a few blocks up from the beach along Seaview Street. The walk is a bit longer, but it's free parking. Just be sure to pay attention to the street maintenance signs. There's no parking allowed for a couple hours every week due to street cleaning.

Amenities: Port Hueneme is a pretty nice beach. The city has done a fine job maintaining it. There are restrooms, parking (free and pay), showers, and some darn good fishing.
